Saturday night, Toronto FC forward Bright Dike made his long awaited return to the pitch after being out of action for half a year with an Achilles’ injury. With his side down 4-1 to Sporting Kansas City, Dike was a 68th-minute substitute. He got a powerful shot off that sent two projectiles flying — the ball, well wide of the goal, and his shoe, which found the back of the net.
While Dike may have been embarrassed by his far-flung footwear, the Sporting Park crowd lustily approved of the shoe goal. All things considered, the Oklahoman-born Nigerian international footballer can take comfort in that his foot remained attached on the play.
