Mike Schmidt’s unprecedented combination of power and defense molded him into one of baseball’s greatest third basemen. The powerful right-handed hitter slugged 548 career home runs — belting 40 or more round trippers in three separate seasons and 30 or more HRs 10 other times.
Schmidt established a MLB record for third basemen by clouting 48 homers in 1980, and once hit four consecutive round-trippers in a single game. A three-time National League MVP, he was a 12-time All-Star, won 10 Gold Gloves and was named The Sporting News Player of the Decade for the 1980s.
PHILLIES ALL-TIME ROSTER
In 18 years with the Philadelphia Phillies, Schmidt amassed 106.5 WAR (wins above replacement). The franchise’s next biggest WAR contributions on the all-time roster come from pitchers Robin Roberts (69.7) and Steve Carlton (64.6).
Here we present the entire Phillies lineup constructed entirely by choosing the player with the team’s highest WAR at each position, including a rotation of three starting pitchers and one reliever.
