The Pirates became the sixth MLB team in 2014 to turn a triple play when they went around the horn against the Cubs this past Sunday. Triggered by Josh Harrison’s snappy throw to second, the 5-4-3 triple play was the club’s first in more than five years and first ever in PNC Park.
Best of all for Pittsburgh, they went on to win the game 7-3 after trailing by three.
Mets 5-4-3-2 Triple Play
Three weeks ago, it was another NL team that flashed defensive brilliance, as the Mets turned a 5-4-3-2 triple play when the Dodgers’ Yasiel Puig tried to sneak across home plate.
Indians 7-2-4 Triple Play
Puig was again the odd man out in a thoroughly reviewed triple play put together by the Indians in July. It was only the second successful 7-2-4 combination in Major League history.
Cardinals 4-6-3 Triple Play
On June 6th, Cardinals second baseman Daniel Descalso snagged a Jose Bautista liner to start a triple play that ended a bases-loaded jam against the Blue Jays.
Rockies 5-4-3 Triple Play
In May, the Rockies needed an interference call to pull off a 5-4-3 triple play against the Padres.
Yankees 5-4-3 Triple Play
In April, the Yankees turned in the first triple play of the season when they went around the horn against the Rays in Tampa.
