Hammerin’ Hank Aaron, who methodically slugged his way into the record books for the Braves from 1954 to 1974 is far and away the franchise’s all-time leader in the wins above replacement statistic. After being named Rookie of the Year, Aaron made the All-Star team every year of his two decades with the team.
Noticeably absent from the roster are Braves’ 1990s pitching trio of John Smoltz, Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine who combined for a 453-224 record, and a 2.97 ERA.
FROM BEANTOWN TO HOTLANTA
Founded in 1871, as the Red Stockings, the Braves are the oldest continuously operating professional sports franchise in America. The team spent the better part of eight decades in Boston, before shifting to Milwaukee for a dozen years, and finally settling in Atlanta starting with the 1966 season.
Three of the players on the Braves all-time roster by WAR played for the team when it was known as the Boston Beaneaters — second baseman Bobby Lowe (19.1), shortstop Herman Long (35.4), and pitcher Kid Nichols (108.5).
