Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has racked up over 10,000 rushing yards on the gridiron, but he couldn’t make it the 90 feet from home plate to first base against Jennie Finch’s wicked rise ball.

In fairness to Peterson, a number of far more experienced hitters have been embarrassed by Finch over the years. Among her strikeout victims are MLB legends Albert Pujols, Mike Piazza, Barry Bonds and Alex Rodriguez (who refused to even try swinging).

“I've faced more than 35 major leaguers, and only two have ever made contact against me.”
— Jennie Finch

What makes connecting with a softball so devilishly difficult for baseball players (and the occasional football player)? A lot of it has to do with the unfamiliarity of picking up the ball released from such a low trajectory.
