For some time now, college recruiters have been targeting ever younger athletes in a effort to get an edge on rival programs. Case in point; recruiters incurred the wrath of LeBron James earlier this year for pursuing his 10-year-old son.
In May, Syracuse took the trend to its most absurd — albeit tongue-in-cheek — conclusion. Football coach Scott Shafer sent a scholarship offer to sportscaster Adam Schein’s newborn son, Theo.
Note that Shafer’s offer is contingent on Theo attaining a minimum height of 6’1″ and weight of 200 lbs. This is a strange clause to add considering that famed Syracuse alums Floyd Little (5’10” 196 lbs) and Marvin Harrison (6’0″ 179 lbs) would not have met the criteria.
SCHEIN ON
Theo is just one of three potential recruiting targets in the Schein household. Given the opportunity, Theo’s older sisters could become a potent pair of attackers on Syracuse’s renowned lacrosse team.
Prospective recruiters should note — having previously participated in the Ice Bucket Challenge — Jolie and Maya Shein already have experience in administering the time-honored championship ritual.
ELDER SCHEIN
As for the elder Schein, Adam will be appearing this summer on his own sports show on the CBS Sports Network. Schein graduated from Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications in 1999. The year before receiving his degree in broadcast journalism, he won the John Bayliss Award for Excellence in Radio Journalism.
